Abstract: While the stability of a single Lamb dipole provides a starting point for understanding coherent vortex motion, the interaction of several dipoles presents a richer dynamical problem. In this talk, we consider initially well-separated Lamb dipoles and discuss how their motion is affected by mutual interaction. We examine the interplay between translation and deformation as the dipoles approach one another, and explain the questions that must be addressed when passing from the dynamics of a single traveling wave to those of several interacting structures. The emphasis is on the motion and deformation of coherent dipolar structures before they collide.
